As the seasons change and cold Canadian winds blow across Lake Erie, it's time to think about snow shovels, winter parkas, and...surfing?You bet. Surfing requires waves (duh!), and
This is only the start of the season, though. For some, surfing may continue until the lake ices over.
Among the popular surfing spots is Edgewater State Park Beach, although any beach in the Cleveland area is a potential launch and return spot. On a good day, surfers report upwards of a hundred surfers can be found indulging their passion. I found reference to a book that sounds like a good resource -- Surfing the Great Lakes, by P. L. Strazz.
Joining the surfers are surf kayakers. A conventional whitewater kayak can be surfed. There is also a type specifically made for this purpose, a sort of cross between surfboard and kayak which the paddler sits upon rather than within.
So, if you are in need of a wave fix, the next time we have a few days of north wind, grab your board and a wetsuit and head to Cleveland, aka Waikiki North.
