Ohio has spawned many actors. Of these, five can rightly be considered giants of Hollywood.Lillian Gish- born in Springfield in 1893, Gish was introduced to filmmaker D. W. Griffith by her friend Mary Pickford in 1912. Gish later appeared in many of Griffith's landmark films such as The Birth of a Nation. Gish made a successful transition to talkies, gaining an Oscar nomination for Duel in the Sun. She made her last film, The Whales of August, at the age of 93.
Clark Gable- born in Cadiz, 1901. Gable hit Hollywood just as audio was taking hold. First cast in thug roles, he quickly carved out a niche as a strong, polished leading man in films such as Mutiny on the Bounty and the classic Gone with the Wind.
Tyrone Power-the Cincinnati native was another in his family's long line of entertainers. Initially unsuccessful in Hollywood, he took to the New York stage. There he was 'discovered' by 20th Century Fox. He starred as lead man in many hits of the 30's and 40's such as Rose of Washington Square and The Mark of Zorro. Later in his career, he again returned to the stage to great success.
Doris Day- Doris Mary Anne von Kapelhoff was born in Cincinnati in 1924. She initially achieved reknown for her singing voice. Once producers saw the warmth and polish she brought to the scree, though, she was cast in films throughout the 50's and 60's. Among her biggest hits were The Man Who Knew Too Much, in which she sang Que Sera, Sera, engraving the tune on the hearts of a generation. She reached the peak of her popularity with Rock Hudson in a series of domestic comedies such as Pillow Talk.
Paul Newman- from Shaker Heights. Newman's career includes several of the iconic films of the 20th century, such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Hustler, Hud, and Cool Hand Luke. He has been nominated for nine academy awards. Newman has also directed numerous films and appeared in many successful Broadway plays.
He's also famous for his food products, the profits of which are given to charities, and his sports car racing passion. He and his wife, the actress Joanne Woodward, have been longtime active supporters of the drama program at Newman's alma mater, Kenyon College.
